Once a lure lands — by QR, callback, malvertising or email — delivery turns a file into execution: Office spawning interpreters, mounted ISO/IMG, LNK and HTA, and ClickFix clipboard-to-run. This pack covers detecting those chains on the endpoint.
Signals at a Glance
| Chain | Signal | ATT&CK |
|---|---|---|
| Malicious document | winword/excel/outlook spawning cmd/powershell/mshta/wscript | T1566.001 T1204.002 |
| ISO/IMG container | Mount event then execution from the mounted volume | T1553.005 |
| LNK abuse | explorer spawning LNK that launches an interpreter/LOLBin | T1204.001 |
| HTA | mshta.exe executing remote/HTA content | T1218.005 |
| ClickFix | Run dialog / clipboard paste into powershell (explorer->powershell) | T1059.001 |
Office & Script Hosts
The classic and still-common signal is an Office application spawning a command interpreter or script host — almost never legitimate:

Containers, LNK & ClickFix
- Alert on ISO/IMG mount events followed by execution from the mounted volume (a Mark-of-the-Web bypass), and on
explorer.exelaunching LNK files that run interpreters or LOLBins. - Alert on
mshta.exeexecuting remote content and onregsvr32/rundll32with network paths. - For ClickFix, alert on
explorer.exe(Run dialog) spawning PowerShell with a clipboard-pasted command — a user tricked into running the attacker’s own line.
SigmaHQ covers Office-spawn, mshta/LOLBin and ISO-mount chains; Elastic prebuilt rules cover ClickFix-style Run-dialog execution and container abuse.
